Who would have thought that something as simple as socks would make such a difference? I'm here to tell you they do. Quite simply, they do. Read on to find out more.
Riding on the track as much as I do, I began to need something more than just boot socks. I was wearing boot socks like you would wear with a pair of cowboy boots. (before you have to ask: yes, I'm from Texas and yes, I have cowboy boots
) Boot socks would fall down around my ankles and wouldn't wick away the sweat. In general they were just a cotton material and were entirely too hot. They didn't work well as an athletic type sock, which is really what I needed while riding on the track. Moving around as much as you do while riding a sport bike on the track, you find that having a pair of socks that are supportive, moisture wicking, cooling, and that don't bunch up on you is a vital asset.
I started thinking I would just pick up a pair of the taller socks I had seen at MotoLiberty (which just happens to be local to me here in Dallas, how lucky am I!?). Once I arrived there, I started looking over these Rev'It socks to see why on earth they were $36.99 a pair as compared to the others at around $9.99 to $11.99 a pair. It didn't take long for me to realize that there was some major though that went into the Rev'It socks.
An excerpt from the Rev'It catalogue in regards to the racing socks:
Rev'It Racing socks are specially developed for riders in extreme sports conditions, guaranteeing the best possible comfort and protection for the feet's muscles and tendons. The complex padding system protects exactly those areas where impact and rubbing are likely to occur, and effectively reduces the chance of skin abrasions and pressure sores. The elasticized materials support the feet and reduce muscle fatigue when riding the track.
From the catalogue, I've taken a screen shot of an explanation of all of the different aspects of the socks. Like I've already mentioned, they really did put a lot of thought into these things!

They are made of the following materials:
The socks come in the following sizes:
From all of this you can see that these aren't your run of the mill one-size-fits-all socks. You don't buy these in a bag of 20 for $4.99 from the local WalMart. Having worn these for a total about about 25 track days, I can personally say that these things work. They act like a compression sock of sorts. They help to keep your muscles in alignment so they don't have to work to keep themselves in alignment. That helps your body conserve energy and helps to keep you mentally focused while you're on the track. All of the air flow channels came across as a gimmick to me at first. My boots are vented to begin with, so I didn't think I would notice much of a difference, if any at all. After having ridden a back-to-back track day in 100+ degree heat in central Texas at Texas World Speed way on both a water cooled and an air cooled bike this past weekend, I can say with confidence that my feet never got hot. I never once felt like my arches were giving out or that my calves or shins were getting tired. My boots never rubbed and I never ran into that annoying toe seam issue that I've run into so often on other, far inferior socks. I've never developed that raw sensation from too much peg pressure. My calves have never felt like they wanted to shake and/or give out on me. Sure, conditioning has a lot to do with that, but on days like we just rode in, every last bit helps. Unless you're a professional athlete, you're going to need the help where you can get it. These socks provide that help, not to mention, your feet won't smell like the high school locker room at the end of the day. Score one for the drive home!
